The Alberta Summer Games were held this year in Airdrie from July 24th – 27th. Approximately 2,600 athletes and coaches from across the province competed in 15 different events. The Games pitted the best young Albertan athletes ranging in age from 11 to 17 against each other in a variety of disciplines ranging from athletics to volleyball. The Alberta Cup is awarded to the zone that achieves the most medal points and was earned by Calgary this year, which repeated as champions from 2012. Both of Bow Valley Credit Union’s Airdrie branches were proud to sponsor and volunteer at The Games. Their volunteer efforts saw them working in Food Services, Accommodations as well as various sporting events, in particular the Canoe/Kayak Slalom events.
Jens Lins, the coordinator for the Canoe/Kayak Slalom event, sent this message to those who volunteered for these event: “Thanks again for volunteering today. Most of you I had a chance to thank you personally, but just want to say how valuable it was to our sport having you guys, gals and family come out spending a nice Saturday volunteering for our sport!!! There is no way we could have done it without you people!!!! It was cool to see how involved you got with a sport you have likely never seen this close up before and now be there, part of judging the kids as they competed for the Alberta title or being part of the crucial task of us pulling off somewhere around 300 runs by getting boats out of the water quickly and back to the start line.
Duncan Daniels, Chief Judge of the Slalom Canoe Kayak event added to Jens’ comments that he “also wanted to thank all of the volunteers who helped put on this event. It was a real pleasure to work with so many great people who totally understand what it takes to put on an event like the slalom event at the Airdrie Summer Games.”
Bow Valley Credit Union’s volunteering staff was enthusiastic about playing a part in the Alberta Summer Games and agreed that it was a great and memorable experience.
