Time seems to be flying by right now. I’m borderline shocked every time I look at the calendar. I think I’ve been a little bit too focused on the big picture these days and that’s not necessarily the right thing to do. Getting caught with all the big stuff means that I don’t always appreciate all the little things – the new experiences, lessons, and achievements that I’ve had on the big race forwards.
John Lennon had it right: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”. So, I’m trying to take a step back and get some perspective. There’s a lot to be grateful for and I think it might be time to take a moment and smell the roses, so to speak. All those little things that I don’t always pay that much attention to — some of them really deserve some kudos. The small successes and happy moments deserve to be celebrated as well (ok, not as much as the really big wins). I think that if you’re waiting for the big life highlights to rejoice, there are a lot of moments that aren’t getting the recognition they deserve. Possibly I’m saying this because it seems like there are a lot bumps in the road. Hard knocks make us who we are, but so do the little things. Any day now the tulips are going to wake up and realize that it’s spring. Enjoy kind words when you do a favour for a friend or coworker. For that matter, appreciate and enjoy your family, friends and the people you spend your days with.
When I remember, I think the small things bring some much needed balance to how I see the world. We live in an awesome world where there is so much potential. I hope that less of a focus on the big picture means that my eyes will be open to more possibilities and appreciation for the moments that make for happy memories.
May your heart find joy in the small things. They matter too. Have a wonderful long weekend.
